The South-Western Bathhouse, known to Torontonians simply as the banya, is a family-run Eastern European bathhouse behind a Mississauga plaza. It has a cedar Parilka with four levels of heat over a wood-fired brick stove, a dry Finnish sauna, a Turkish hammam tiled with artifacts from Istanbul, a cold plunge and a tea room serving Eastern European food. Admission is $65 and days alternate between ladies only, men only and co-ed. It closes for the season and reopens on 19 September.
Miraj Hammam Spa sits on the fifth floor of the Shangri-La Hotel on University Avenue. Its modern hammam is booked privately and exclusively for each guest, so the ritual of purification happens in solitude rather than on a communal floor. Sixty minutes of treatment time also opens the hotel health club's steam room, sauna, jacuzzi and lap pool. Guests are advised to arrive an hour early to make the most of the pool and health club amenities.
